PERSONAL FINANCE WRITER/EDITOR

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, a national magazine that has been advising consumers and investors for more than 70 years, seeks an enthusiastic and ambitious senior-level writer and editor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have an in-depth knowledge of personal finance issues, with at least ten years’ experience writing and editing articles about retirement and retirement planning as well as other financial topics—including taxes, credit, banking, insurance, saving for college and smart spending--for magazines, newspapers or websites. Social media proficiency and experience being interviewed by the media are a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write practical, easy-to-understand articles geared toward individuals and families for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and Kiplinger.com.
  • Assign and edit articles, and work with art department to develop illustration and photo ideas, sidebars, graphics and digital presentation.
  • Generate story ideas.
  • Work with the editor and other senior staff on long-term editorial projects for the magazine, related publications and the website.

Preference will be given to applicants willing to locate in the Washington, DC, area to work in our downtown offices.

Vice President for Personal Finance Content

The Kiplinger Washington Editors, a leading national publisher of business and financial content, seeks an energetic leader with demonstrated personal finance knowledge to advance the success of our print publications while accelerating our ongoing digital transition. The successful candidate will be a high-achieving editorial leader with a keen understanding of digital and print platforms. He or she must have several years of experience in editorial leadership and a proven track record of motivating staff.

KWE’s Vice President for Personal Finance Content is a senior editorial leadership position who will work closely with other C-level executives, including the CEO, COO, CFO, and Chief Content Officer, in coordination with circulation and advertising sales managers.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all of Kiplinger’s personal finance content. Those products include Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, Kiplinger.com, Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, Kiplinger’s Investing for Income, Retirement Planning Guide newsstand special, premiums and other content as developed.
  • Inspire the current staff of 32 experienced print and digital journalist and recruit qualified candidates to join a growing team.
  • Generate new-product ideas, execute the editorial creation and cooperate with marketing to develop a sales plan.
  • Work with circulation/sales department to review and enhance sales material to attract new print subscribers and drive email list growth.
  • Work with custom publishing division to identify and develop print and interactive content to leverage the Kiplinger brand and develop a growing audience of corporate clients.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Expertise in personal finance publishing both in print and online.
  • Sound knowledge of and writing experience on topics such as investing, retirement planning, personal income taxes, estate planning and home ownership.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to analyze trends and know-how to create new products.
  • Ability to create an environment that motivates and maintains a high level of employee performance and morale.
  • Firm understanding of the changing nature of the publishing industry.

Audience Engagement Specialist

Kiplinger.com seeks an Audience Engagement Specialist to lead digital business development and growth through social media, email, and other digital distribution channels.

Essential Functions:

  • Build connection, loyalty, and reach with Kiplinger’s digital audience
  • Critically evaluate opportunities as the digital landscape evolves/matures
  • Evaluate and recommend new opportunities; communicate with third-parties
  • Work cohesively with the Kip.com internal team to execute day-to-day and overall strategies

Specific tasks may include:

  • Managing existing social media partnerships – Facebook, KeeWee, Twitter, Flipboard, etc.
  • Management / preparation of daily email newsletter – K Today
  • Analyzing campaigns and efforts as needed
  • Conducting strategic reviews of the Kiplinger audience and building analyses for assessment / recommendations for opportunities / audience segmentation for targeting of offers
  • Pitching of editorial content to targeted distribution outlets (Yahoo, MSN, Apple News, others)

Goals:

  • Help Kip.com grow our overall audience of almost 5 million monthly unique visitors, engaging visitors to spend more time on site, more repeat visits, more information consumed, and building a better overall relationship with our audience
  • Assisting in the effort to make our audience feel valued/appreciated and allowing Kiplinger.com to learn from our audience
  • Help guide internal strategies on audience targeting / segmentation / broad audience vs. niche audience offerings, and providing input to sales and editorial focused efforts.

Desired Skill Sets:

  • 3-5 years of experience in the field of social media
  • Business/marketing background preferred
  • Familiarity with Adobe (Omniture), Google and Facebook analytics, Social Flow, bit.ly a plus.
  • Ability to think qualitatively and strategically.

Kiplinger’s Retirement Report seeks an experienced reporter to work in our downtown Washington, D.C. offices writing personal finance and lifestyle features on all facets of planning for and living in retirement. Our subscribers are affluent retirees and soon-to-be retirees who want impartial, timely information and advice on income-producing strategies, tax and estate planning, insurance, long-term care, Medicare, Social Security, IRAs and pensions, charitable giving, technology and travel. A candidate must be able to cultivate sources, spot trend and write easy-to-read, well-researched articles on complex issues. In addition to writing for the monthly print publication, the successful applicant will work closely with our award-winning Web site, www.kiplinger.com.

A bachelor’s degree and five years of reporting experience are required. Personal-finance writing background, experience with CMS, understanding of SEO and social media are all plusses.
