The only thing worse than having money burning a hole in your pocket, it seems, is wondering where in the devil the money that's supposed to be burning a hole in your pocket is. Now that the IRS is finally mailing the economic stimulus checks (a.k.a. rebates) Congress authorized last February, taxpayers are getting increasingly antsy about when their money will arrive.
The planned payment schedule has been widely publicized. By now, in fact, most of the 45 million or so electronically deposited rebates should have arrived in taxpayers' bank accounts. The final batch -- billions of dollars for taxpayers whose Social Security numbers end in 76 through 99 -- is supposed to be sent no later than May 16.

How to Make Your Tax Rebate Go Further | ||
The government began mailing paper rebate checks to 88 million Americans on May 9, according to the schedule below. Checks to recipients with Social Security numbers ending in 00 to 09 are supposed to be in the mail by May 16. But there's a big difference between when the first checks go in the mail and when the last taxpayer actually gets his or her money.
A dirty little secret
First, there's the unavoidable fact that it takes a few days, at least, for the Postal Service to get the check to your mailbox. More importantly -- and more frustrating for millions of taxpayers -- is that the IRS schedule applies only to taxpayers whose 2007 tax returns were processed by the agency by the April 15 deadline.
Tens of millions of returns filed during the week or so run-up to the deadline, and after it passed, aren't covered. And the IRS says the owners of those returns can expect to wait for their rebates a minimum of six weeks from the time they filed -- regardless of the last two digits of their Social Security numbers.
So, even if your Social Security number ends in 00, don't hold your breath waiting for a rebate if you filed close to the tax deadline. You might not get your money until June.
If you haven't filed yet, figure at least six weeks will pass between the time you send in your return and when the IRS sends you your rebate. (Late filers can speed up the process by filling in the direct deposit information on their tax return, regardless of whether they have a refund coming. That ensures the IRS will electronically deposit their rebate.)
Checking on your check
If you're wondering where your money is, use the IRS Where's My Stimulus Payment tool to check. Answer three simple questions -- your Social Security number, the type of return you filed and the number of exemptions you claimed -- and you'll get a quick report of how big your rebate is and when it was, or will be, electronically deposited or dropped in the mail. If you're more than a week or so ahead of the trigger date, you'll be asked to check back later.
As noted earlier, all electronic deposits -- for taxpayers whose returns were processed by April 15 -- should be made by May 16.
For taxpayers who will receive their rebate checks by mail, see the official IRS schedule below. If you filed near or after the April 15 deadline, your rebate is likely to be delayed.

Also, per the IRS website, if you had your filing or preparation fees deducted right from your refund, you will also receive a paper check as opposed to direct deposit. The reason for this is that the company you filed your return with gives you a "Refund Anticipation Loan". This means you got the refund directly from their bank and NOT the IRS, therefore- the IRS never had your direct deposit information so they have no choice but to mail you a check.
POSTED BY: Angry (May 14, 2008 02:17 PM)
Did you also know that if you had your taxes done and the service fees were taken out through H&R block etc. You will NOT get a direct deposit, you will receive an actual check...
POSTED BY: Jdub (May 14, 2008 02:17 PM)
Another point is if you owed the IRS money on your return and paid via electronic direct debit your check will not be electronic direct deposited to that same account, but instead you will get a paper check sent to you. So you have to wait until later date when checks are mailed.

...even if you filed electronically, and had your refund direct deposited, if you had processing fees deducted from your return, you will get a PAPER check? To me this is preposterous!!!...

So the last two digits in my social end in 05, I filed electronically and got my tax return (in) on Feb 1. So why is it that I haven't received my rebate check yet?? No one can tell me why.
POSTED BY: TurboGuy (May 14, 2008 02:31 PM)
I read that "how" you filed is important, too. For instance, if you filed using tax software or preparer AND you had your filing fee deducted from your anticipated refund, then your check will come by mail, even if the refund was direct-deposited.

According to the payment chart, my husband and I should have received our electronic deposit with the first batch. As of today, May 14, the electronic deposit hasn't been made...I won't hold my breath on this money. Seeing is believing.

I was saddened (and a wee bit angry) when I found out about my stimulus check. First of all, I want to let readers know that if you owe the IRS ANYTHING they will take it out of your "stimulus" check. 2nd thing is that I didn't make enough to qualify for the full $600. I made enough for only $300. Then with what I owed the feds that left about half which covered the surprise overdraft in my account. Left me with nothing. That was a bad day. No stimulus for me. Hope others have better luck than me.

Does anyone know if a student who is out of work now and has unavoidably defaulted on a student loan will still be given her rebate check? She filed her tax returns on time for the year 2007.

Oh, great. First I hear I'm getting it mid-May ('cause I e-filed in March), then they say they're going out a week early (which should be early May), but according to this schedule, I'm not going to see it until mid-June!

Waiting, waiting, waiting. What if THEY had to pay THEIR bills on time ? In this definate recession, we need this 'stimulas' check SO badly - feels like the government is just toying with us !!!

I havn't received my rebate yet and it was supposed to be debited into my account by May 9th!...

What most people don't know is if you filed electronically but had your fee deducted from your refund, you have to wait for a paper check to arrive. This wasn't posted on the IRS.gove site until after my pre 2009 refund should have already been received.

I haven't received my rebate deposit yet, according to the IRS's schedule it should have been in my account last week. I went to the local IRS office and they told me that there were some rebates that were posted last week into the wrong bank accounts. So, if you don't get yours on time like me, she told me that we are guaranteed to have it within 30 days of the date promised, (in my case was May 9th).

You might want to add that if the tax preparation fee was deducted from the refund or if the refund was processed via rapid refund, you will recieve your check via the mail and not through direct deposit.

You qualify if you earned wages at a JOB (line 7). But if you are self employed and suffered a loss therefore you receive a refund you will not qualify for the stimulus check....So all of the other years you paid taxes with the exception of one year means nothing.

If you filed with a company like turbo tax. In the eyes of the IRS, you did not file electronically, you must look at the paper check dates.

What they DONT tell you... I prepared my taxes on February 4 using Turbo Tax, and received what I THOUGHT was "direct deposit." The SUPPOSED DAY for my refund came and went, according to the electronic distribution schedule. I went onto the IRS website and learned that since my preparation fees were taken from my return, it WAS NOT a direct deposit. Therefore, HAHAHA on me, I sit here waiting for my paper check to be mailed on June 27...I guess I will just use it to fill my oil tank for the coming winter...

I am truly puzzled about why Direct Deposit is disallowed if payment to a tax service comes from a taxpayer refund due to overpayment of 2007 taxes. The balance of the refund was Direct Deposited from IRS to my personal bank account, but now I have to wait for a check for my share of the stimulous package. Where is the correlation?

This whole rebate is a joke. While I as a single mother trying to pay for a child in college is not eligible for child credit with this rebate, I also have to wait until the end of June to receive it. I submitted my taxes the end of January and still have to wait for this paltry amount until the end of next month. Glad the government gets to keep making interest off of my rebate while I can barely afford to pay for summerschool classes since this great government has also cut grants and funding for students as well...

I was all excited about my refund that was supposed to be directly deposited in my account on May 9th I didn't get it and do you know why? Something interesting that I don't see mentioned anywhere (including the IRS website): If you had your taxes prepared and the fees withheld from your refund, you are NOT eligible for Direct Deposit, even if your return was direct deposited. Here I was wondering where my check is, so I call H&R Block only to find out that because their fees were taken from my refund (as opposed to being paid out of pocket) I won't be getting my money until July.

What alot of people don't know is that even though they use direct deposit to recieve their refund, they will still be waiting on a paper check. This due to the fact that if you file your return on the internet using a site that you had to pay on or a service such as Jackson Hewitt,H&R Block, etc. Those were temporary accounts and are closed now. So the IRS will send check directly to you.

Although the money arrived in a propitious time, it is very sad that this President thinks he can actually turn around the economic downward spiral by issuing these funds. Why not increase the hourly rate...why not force companies to give decent merit raises!! Additionally, he can give up some of the profits he and his father have made on oil investments and donate that....

Everbody keeps using the word "rebate". I am sorry but this is no rebate on taxes you have already paid. This is an advance on what you will pay next time...SO expect that on your tax filing next April for it to ask if you received your $300, $600. $1200, $1800 and for you to subtract that from you refund....You might want to tuck it away...and use it then to pay the IRS back and maybe make some interest in the mean time.

I've had other friends who filed with Turbo Tax like I did, and who had the fee automatically w/drawn from their initial rebate and they've already received their stimulus check, via direct deposit. I was supposed to have received mine already, but still nothing.

Highly upset! In the year of 2007, I was going to night school full time and I earned a wage of $4800.00 for the year. After filing taxes through H&R Block online, I received a message stating that I qualified for the Stimulus amount of $600, so why did I receive just $300? I reviewed the IRS.gov website and I was unable to find a "qualifying net income" requirement anywhere on their website...If there are annual income stipulations to the stimulus checks, the public should have been advised prior to the checks being issued.

Reese, Count your blessings. I work for the postal service. The number of people coming to our office begging for information regarding their refund makes me sad every day. They are afraid they won't get the refund if they have moved...they are afraid they didn't file on time to get the refund and on and on. Many people live week to week and this $600 or $1200 is going to make a huge difference in their lives because of the terrible increase in energy costs. I feel lucky that the check will be a nice addition to our summer vacation instead of going to paying for our bills for one month. It is a blessing to those of us who see the check arrive and smile, instead of watching it arrive and wiping the sweat off of our brow because we know that we have room to breath for another month.

Why is the IRS discriminating against a part of the population who need it the most? My two children are 19 & 21, both full time college students, working part time, living at home and my dependents. They both filed returns on their income. I do not qualify for the extra $300 for them because they are over 17, yet because they were listed as dependants on mine they don't qualify for themselves either. They are taxpayers as well, they should be entitled to their money.

I just found out that only those taxpayers who got their refunds electronically deposited would get their rebate done so. I had to pay this year, but thought I had filed to have my rebate electronically paid. Not so--appears that to do so the gov would have taken my payment directly from my account rather than me sending it in.

It is sad that the IRS has everyone on pins and needles over these rebate checks. I haven't spoken with one person who has actually rcvd it. By the time we do rcv them, if we actually do, the money will already have been spent on a bill. So tell me how is this stimulating the economy?...

Appreciate the other comments and information tools for the rebate check on this site. I guess, I didn't completely understand that even though you file electronically and have direct deposit, if you still have fees deducted from your return, your rebate is sent by mail instead of direct deposit. No, this doesn't seem right to me either...We'll see what happens in July.

POSTED BY: mary (May 29, 2008 11:15 PM)
I am too waiting for my stimulus rebate. You will get a carbon copy letter in the mail couple days prior to when you are supposed to get your direct deposit/check. I got mine but didn't read it closely until I kept looking at my non stimulated bank account. The carbon copy letter will tell you how much you will be receiving and underneath it says why. It will also say when it will be deposited. After reading everything, mine was under review, most likely b/c I amended my original tax return and thus, am not going to get my rebate on the planned date. It also says that if they don't explain why it's under review or have not gotten the rebate after 60 days to call a number. I'm still waiting for 60 days to pass. So those under review may not get their check until 2 months later.

I haven't received my first rebate check which I badly need to pay for my higher utility and gas bills. This already looks like a recession by design.

Tami & Cynthia,
I do not know why you are complaining about when you get your stimulus check. The government did not have to give you any extra money to begin with. At least they are giving back to the tax payers.
People need to realize that they are not owed this money and as far as I am concerned I will take the money whenever I get it. It is extra money that I would not have received otherwise.
POSTED BY: Kim (June 05, 2008 04:13 PM)
We filed in February and I have called H&R Block and they pulled our return and said we would be getting a paper check and based on my husband's SS we would get it by June 21st. I almost have to agree with Nomen on the recession by design. It sure came on fast, thank you Government for allowing the oil prices to be unjustably raised to the proportions that gas is now. As for having filed in February and not getting your checks until July, be glad your even getting them, as they certainly didn't have to. Oh, no, I'm not one of those early recievers, as mine is supposed to be here in July sometime, too. And yes, it certainly hurts big time, as I can't even work being on disability that doesn't even pay half of what I was making when I was working.

POSTED BY: taxprosue (June 05, 2008 07:25 PM)
Whoa. This is not "FREE" money. It is an advance on NEXT YEAR's refund! The government is changing next year's tax tables to get us a bigger refund. They're just sending us the extra now. If you don't get it now, you'll get it then (assuming you qualify.) And this is YOUR money: your overpayment of withholding taxes against your final tax liability...
POSTED BY: JoeG (June 05, 2008 07:41 PM)

Most disconcerting here are the references to "the government" as if "it" is a singular, self sustaining entity. Government is YOU, WE, ALL OF US VOTERS. The economic stimulus checks are not coming from "the government" but from our own pockets just as does a tax refund...We've just seen how we, the government, can effect a bid for a Presidential nominee. The same power can be excercised anytime one of your elected representatives is not performing as promised. Vote in November and help to change what you consider to be injustices.

According to the primary ss# in our household, we should have had our stimulus check deposited May 9. We filed our taxes in January and had direct deposit for our refund. I did not owe any taxes , and I did not have any back money owed the government. I do receive Social Security and I filed the correct forms to have the rebate direct deposited, but it was not deposited on the date supplied by the IRS. When I inquired with the IRS, I was told that it had been an error on their part and I would now have to wait on a mailed rebate check on or around July 4, 2008. Why do these things only happen to older or disabled social security retirees?...

I think this money is more a slap in the face then money to stimulate the economy. How can we stimulate the economy if gas prices continue to rise? All that money is going to used for is gas. ...we all should have got 800$ to 1000$. THAT would have stimulated our economy, not 300$...

That is not what they had in mind. If I owe money, I am not going to borrow money to stimulate mine or anyone else's economy. I am seventy-one years old. In the past seven years the government has done this twice, but for the first time in my or anyone else's lifetime. Boy, that Bush is some genius! And about as fiscally conservative as the mortgage companies that screwed up that market. God help those who will be paying for centuries to come. Bah!

I do not get a rebate check, but that is Ok. For these reasons I don't; I am a Senior Citizen, disabled,on Social Security,..I guuess my only complaint is the fact that I started to work when I was 11 years old and I worked and paid into the system from the time I was a teenager til I was disabled. It amounted to about 47 years of paying income taxes, amongst all the other taxes I paid during that time. I don't really want their handout but would appreciate some kind acknowledgement for my work and a thank you for all the years I put in to make these handouts possible.

I as well, am one of the unlucky few that looks like will be left out in the cold on these rebate checks. My situation for not getting it is WAY WAY out of my control and has to do that I was under doctors care from a car accident last year, therefore not being able to work and not having to file any taxes as well. I feel that this is not fair to the little people, like me, who was not able to control this and...not being able to be entitled to this "wonderful package". So what money I do have, will not be going to anything out of the ordinary and instead, just barely fighting to keep a roof over my head and other things necessary to survive in these difficult times!!...

You are still or should be entitled to a rebate. If you are on SS all you need do is file a 2007 tax return, even if you are not required due to SS as your only income. Contact your local state representative they can help you out. The only way you will not get the refund is if someone else claims you as a dependent on federal taxes.

If you don't normally file you need to get a 1040A tax form...fill in as usual name address s.s.# if married fill in both of your info. check filing status single or joint (married).......etc. then go down to #14 I believe it is, put in how much s.s. for 2007....go to other side of form sign and date..if married both sign. If want electronically sent...put info in the bank info. where indicated. You can also call IRS....theyre very helpful....and will give you the address to where you mail the form.

I am a server and have received a $2.13 wage (plus tips) for the last 13 years or so....It hurts me more than most people on here who have been complaining because the second the gas prices went up past $3.00 a gallon, my wage went down enormously. So next time one of you is checking the mailbox and slamming your foot on the ground because there is no check there yet, remember that some of us really don't even want the check because it's going to cause more harm then good.

The schedule says by last two numbers of ssn, my check was supposed to be mailed on 6 Jun, but the IRS said, sorry, they were behind and mine wouldn't be mailed until 27 Jun with a three week window....

This whole thing is redic...As a small busniness owner I work nearly 365 days a year, and am ineligible for a rebate check, it's not the money so much as the principle of the thing!

My ssn ends in the grouping 39-51 scheduled for mailing 13 June. I have now been informed 27 June is the likely mail date...

OK Guys! My last 2 digits are in the first group (May 16). We filed (married/jointly) Apr 9 (toooo close to Apr 14, their rules) via snail mail as we had enclosed a check to pay additional taxes, and also provided our electronic banking info as required on the return. Lo and Behold!!! Per our Jun 17 visit to their office the Rebate was direct deposited Jun 19!

One thing I realize that most readers don't know about the stimulus check, is that it is NOT a gift, but a LOAN against next year's tax refund. ...It's not costing the governmnt any money, since they get it back next yer. What kind of stimulus is this??? Most people are using the rebate to pay off credit card debts, so where is it helping???

Anyone know if the government realizes that July 4th POST OFFICES are closed?? When will my check actually be mailed? 3rd? 7th?

According to the flyer from the IRS, we are not required to report the amount of our stimulus payment as taxable income on our 2008 federal income tax return...It sure is going to help my family at this time....

Barry's comment is wrong. This isn't a loan against next year's refund, and you don't have to pay tax on the stimulus payment.

...I have been waiting and waiting for my stimulus check to arrive. My SS ends in 09 so I should've had it months ago right? WRONG, my mother unknowingly claimed me as a dependant on her return, and somehow due to the fact that I am over 18, no one will get money for me...I am sure i paid plenty more than a lot of you in taxes, and because of my mother I had to pay money on my taxes, and I also will not get a stimulus check.. thanks government :S

POSTED BY: K Griffin (July 24, 2008 08:47 PM)
I was supposed to receive the rebate somewhere around June 27th give or take a few days. Here it is July 24, and I still have not received it. - I reverified with the on line calculator, I qualify but when I go to see what has happened it says...not enough earnings, soooo wrong, I made more than enough. So now I guess I try to find a phone number to see what is going on.
